Three boys and a girl are lined up. Their names are Daniel, John, Andrew, and Elizabeth. They are asked to tell who is the oldest. With great logic they tell several perfectly true facts about their age relationship.
Andrew: John is my youngest brother and I will be seventeen tomorrow.
John: Daniel is older than I am and I was 12 on the 20th of March.
Daniel: Elizabeth is my oldest sister and it will soon be thirty years since I was born since I have a birthday in June.
Elizabeth: Andrew is my youngest brother and I will start my 16th journey around the sun on September the 26th.

Okay, Let’s see how well you paid attention. Write down on a piece of paper how old each person was on the day this post was written. Then write down who is the oldest and continue reading this for the ages of me and my siblings.

Daniel is the oldest(As you probably guessed) And he is currently 21. You thought I was going to say 29 didn’t you?
John is the second oldest and he is 20 right now.
Andrew is the third oldest and he is seventeen.
And I… well I am fourteen. I wish I was fifteen but I will have to wait until September 26th for that!

Now you are probably scratching your heads and wondering how all of this could be true. But it is. The logic filled explanation follows…

John is Andrew’s youngest brother but not his younger brother.
Andrew will be seventeen tomorrow in the same way that he was seventeen yesterday and seventeen the day before.
Daniel is older than John and I was 12 on the 20th of March too, In 2001 that is.
I also am Daniel’s oldest sister in the way that I am his youngest sister too. And his younger sister.
And in a few years Daniel will be thirty if he lives that long. Which he probably will.
The 16th journey around the sun part will really confuse some people. I will have completed my fifteenth journey around the sun then and start my sixteenth. That sounds exciting!

As you may have noticed I am getting better at this. It is actually not even 10:00 PM and I am writing a post!
